In this entry into the Business Blog Alphabet, I'm going to talk about the concept of authority. For any business owner trying to sell products or services via the Web, authority is an important subject. Without it, your blogging ventures simply will not succeed.

Here's where your blog comes into the picture, as a way to establish authority. Writing about a topic (and doing it well) helps you demonstrate your expertise on subjects related to your business. This is true regardless of what industry you are in -- real estate, software, financial investing, landscaping. All of the fields and many others require a level of expertise. A blog can help you demonstrate your expertise in a conversational way.

If you use your blog to keep your audience informed news and events related to your business, you can position yourself as the authority within your niche. I see this all the time. For example, I recently came across a blogger who covered the topic of mortgage fraud. I don't know enough about that industry to say whether or not she is the premier expert in the field ... but she sure came off that way with her blogging efforts!

How Authority Creates Buzz

Here's a conversation I want you imagine. Two of your potential customers are talking about your industry, and the types of products and services you provide. One says to the other, "You know, I found this blog the other day that offers a ton of information on this subject. The guy (or gal) really seemed to know his stuff. I'll email you the link."

Now multiply this conversation times 100 or more, and you can begin to see the business-building potential of an authoritative blog.

Here are some tips for establishing yourself as an authority online:

  • Keep track of current events within your industry, and write about those events. Interpret them for your audience, and then relate them back to your products or services in some way.
  • Develop online resources related to your field, such as article libraries, glossaries, tutorials, pictorials, etc.
  • Publish often with quality information. The great thing about blogs is that they are (or should be) fresher and more up-to-date than regular websites. Capitalize on this.

The most important thing is to do an exceptional job with your blogging in order to reap these benefits. There will surely be other bloggers within your field, so you have to work hard to make yours stand out. You have to make yours THE blog to visit for useful and current information, tips and advice, industry news and more.
