Homeowners have once again been reminded to check their home insurance policies with the summer months upon us, as a poll by a home insurance provider reveals that 33 per cent of respondents have fallen victim to garden theft.

Unfortunately, many people simply underestimate the value of the contents in their gardens, which are typically in the region of 2,000. The average worth of our garden treasure is on the increase as we invest in items such as state-of-the-art barbecues, expensive garden furniture and even valuable statues - all of which are easy targets for opportunist thieves.

As a result, homeowners should pay close attention to their home insurance policies and ensure they have adequate cover in place. Some insurers offer cover up to around 2,500 - so you should be able to find a policy that suits your needs. If you do have any items which exceed the policy limit, you may need to take out separate cover.

Take steps to keep your garden contents safe too. Try to secure items to immovable objects, and consider planting prickly bushes around valuable statues which make for a pleasant backdrop but also make life more difficult for thieves.

Ensure that garden gates and outbuildings have suitable locks in place and make sure you use them. If you can, move any expensive items indoors and out of sight. Also look into security devices - such as motion sensitive lights and CCTV cameras. Though they can often be initially expensive, many home insurance providers will reduce premiums when you install these items. Also consider joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Take photographs of items to assist you should a claim be necessary - and check your home insurance policy for conditions and exclusions. If you need more comprehensive cover, compare home insurance policies online with a comparison website.
